I’m sure you read this title in confusion. ‘Why I Don’t Get Naked on Instagram’. However, this is something that has came up as topic of conversation a lot recently so I thought I’d share with you guys to exactly why I don’t get naked on Instagram.
Recently I’ve had many women AND men both tell me how they enjoy the fact that I don’t sexualise myself or get half naked on Instagram. Sounds strange, I know. But then it got me thinking. People are actually noticing the fact that I don’t post images exposing my body on Instagram. That’s when it hit me. If you were to scroll through Instagram today you would repeatedly see “influencers” continually putting out images of their bodies. So I thought to myself why don’t I do that? And you might be interested in why.
First of all, I don’t have a 6 pack, a 22″ waist with a size double D boobs so that’s definitely a factor however it’s much more than that to me. Over the last few years I’ve been in a fighting battle with my Instagram and fallen into the trap of continually comparing myself to others and thinking I had to post certain images to get likes. And with anxiety and depression a key topic in today’s online society it is undoubtedly the fault of the rise in social media. I truly believe this detrimental effect has been the cause of “influencers” who aren’t actually influencing to do good. They continually share unattainable photographs, that aren’t actually real life for them nor show any personality behind them. Therefore it’s inevitable that followers of these “influencers” and users on these social platforms are going to be left with low self esteem and feeling isolated. And that’s the exact reason why I put “influencer” in quotation marks, the term tends to be linked to connotations of the ability to persuade others, but are these “influencers” persuading others into feeling bad about themselves?
With kids nowadays aspiring to be “influencers” over doctors, lawyers or even firemen, surely we should be giving them more than images on a social media platform instead somewhere to learn from. And that’s when I realised I want to share more with my followers, give them knowledge that they may not already know, allow them to gain something from visiting my Instagram. And let’s be serious, you aren’t learning anything from a cute selfie or naked image from me.
So for all you “influencers” or aspiring “influencers” out there, it’s time to re-evaluate. What do people gain from visiting your page? It’s really a question we should all be asking ourselves. Next time you’re sitting on Instagram, go through your followers and visit their profiles and have a think to yourself. How do you feel scrolling through their pictures? Have you gained anything? If not… maybe it’s time to start having a clear out. And from me, well this is where I begin my journey to ensure you gain more than just an outfit picture.
As always I hope this was an interesting read for you. I’d love to hear any feedback you might have, whether good or bad.
